Things About Acting Article
Acting is Being, Then Doing
The easiest way to understand acting is that acting is being, then doing.
Most Actors think of acting as being only the Doing, or the interaction of acting. Many Actors will brag that they have experiences Doing acting, but the reality is that they did their acting without the weight of Emotion!
Working in acting without the weight of doing the Being work in acting, is like doing weights with no weights.
It is key to understand that in order to work in acting you need both to do the BEING side of Acting, the Emotions. Then Do, the DOING side of the work, which is Interaction.
Doing acting interaction without emotional weight is not having either a full or real experience in your acting scenes.
The Being side of the work requires Emotional Activations, and Emotional Preparation. Adding the activated emotion into the acting work.

Acting Baggage Needs to Be Released
Emotional Acting Baggage is the ability to identify emotional residue after working in acting.
Many Actors don’t acknowledge acting baggage and instead hit the bottle after doing their acting roles. The reason why they hit the bottle so hard is because they have emotional residue.
Instead of suppressing your emotional residue, you can release your remaining emotions that you are still active after you have finished your acting role.
It is an important thing to SHARE with your acting friends that Acting Baggage is a Real Thing!

How Do you Know You Activated Emotions Deep Enough?
Activating Emotions over and over and over is an Acting technique to develop Depth towards your acting.
If you go so deep that you become unresponsive you counter your own efforts.
Directors and Teachers should be able to be a guide to help you determine how deep to take your Emotional Preparations.
When you activate emotions in your self-activation techniques you likely want to start the interaction process to work that emotion into rehearsals. This could be practicing yourself jumping into acting materials or doing improvisational work that works with the scripted materials you are working towards.
If you feel so deep that you are completely unresponsive, then you want to adjust yourself to gain more spontaneity. One trick to use is to rest that single emotional range you are working for your scene. You can use this trick of doing a contrasting emotion (happiness rather than regret) so you can jostle your emotions into spontaneity again.
