Open yourself up

Opening yourself up is different for everyone. There are similar things about being open for everyone. Being opened to receiving regardless of if it is a good or unpleasant news is how to grow experience as an Actor.

The more time you can spend being open to both good and bad experiences the more you will go through inside of your acting experiences.

The goals of being open are being open to the limitless possibilities that an experience may offer.

Listen

The Steps of Repetition Exercise in acting involve Listening. Listening is the ability to hear.

Hearing another regardless of what you may think of them, either good or bad is the difference. If you are honest with yourself, you may realize that in life you may be so excited to meet someone that you won’t even listen to what they say. The same thing can happen when you prejudge someone as being not worth your time or lesser of an individual.

In order to achieve listening in repetition you must be opened to hearing them regardless of your personal judgements of the other person.

Receive

Being both open enough and willing enough to receive another person is key in the Steps of Repetition Exercise.

This is not an arbitrary step. You want to accurately receive what the other is communicating.

Take the time needed to accurately receive them.

Intake internally

Internally Intaking what they say, how they say it is the step of intaking. In every way that you can you want to internally take in what the other has communicated including the way in which they are communicating.

When you intake another internally you really connect with them meeting them at their point of expression.

Allow an internal affect to resonate inside you

Based on whatever the responses are that you are starting to feel you want to train yourself to allow your internal affectedness to resonate with whatever is inside of you. You may feel an attraction or a repulsion to what is stimulating you.

This step is to ensure that you are actually letting whatever is stimulating you to resonate inside of you.

It takes discipline to connect to what doesn’t interest you at times. It takes discipline to give what does not immediately attract you attention it deserves because it exists.

This is the step-in steps to repetition exercise which is the maturity aspect. It takes maturity to not only allow an internal affect to what you want to hear and ignore the rest.

Realizing this step is often the step that affects Actors to look like they are not listening during their acting.

Practicing this step is crucial for the emotional awareness of the Actor.

Pin point an external focus

Instead of just rushing your responses, feel free to take the time to pinpoint an external focus. Think about how much more effective it is when an Actor takes a moment to look at the ugly knitted sweater at Christmas time before stating that they feel the sweater is one of the ugliest they have seen.

The action of pin pointing an external focus takes the extra effort to notice what you are expressing to.

Are you expressing to the person off the cuff intentionally in casual dismissance or are you in fact really not aware that you are dismissance of their feelings to hearing they have an ugly sweater?

Taking the time to focus emotionally where your expression is going is a powerful step to keeping it real in acting.

Hint: To find the genuine point of focus allow yourself to find the point of focus just before expressing. You may be surprised what you want to focus on.

Many people do the Repetition exercise eyeball to eyeball training thinking that looking at the eyes are the only part of expression. Decide this for yourself. Find an external focus genuine naturality.

Express internal response

Release your internal response or expression.

As many of these steps may happen in microns or seconds the more you achieve each of these steps the more real your responses will become.

The internal response or expression will often feel like an exchange of feeling or emotion coming from the chest.

Learning to express from areas below the chin takes time and practice. This is why studying the Steps to Repetition Exercise in acting can so enthralling. Adding these steps later on to written material can really assist in the making of an Actor.
