The more you are able to be involved the more your Independent Activities will work for you. DO NOT use Activities as a Prop to occupy yourself or your time.

Utilize Activities to focus your concentration, loosing yourself in involvement.

Acting Activities List of Independent Activities to apply to acting classes. The Doing Exercise is the involved doing to complete a task which starts the acting work, many call it the Doors / Activities Exercise.

How to use independent activities matters to your acting. Working with activities in a way that opens you up to invest your energy into getting done the doing is key. Doing and involvement is up to you as an Actor to achieve. The Goal of Independent Activities is getting lost in the time in deep focus to complete the doing.

Simple Explanation of “In’s and Out’s” Activities and Doors.
1. The inside person is active doing their own independent involvement.
2. The outside person who will later knock on door is in a Being state based on their increasing skills of “Emotional Preparation“.

Breaking acting into two states initially, being and doing clarifies learning for the Actor. The interchange of involvement is a craft learned after these two main states in acting have started to evolve. Actors that learn one without the other are ill equipped in scene work. Learning Doing must be accompanied by Being, which no class I have ever been in has ever taught as a principle.

1. All Doings or Activities are ‘Affected States of Being’. You are affected not by acting but by involvement, this is key. The present condition is the need to complete the Doing or Activity.
2. The outside Door person is the Being person. They are affected by their Independent Emotional Preparation

How to Use Independent activities

Knowing how to do Independent Activities in Meisner Acting Exercises is important. Practicing the Habits that help you develop are available to you so you can grow your concentration.

Focusing on getting done that Activity with the motivation of achieving the result will cause you to lose yourself in your acting work.

If you are concentrating enough doing in your Meisner Acting Exercise you might not even hear the knock at the door until a 2nd or 3rd knock because of your focus. This could be a fantastic thing to be able to learn to concentrate being able to activate this strength of motivation for yourself as an Actor.

Adding Emotional Preparation to How to use Independent Activities is another great event in acting training.

Acting students can add Emotions by remembering to Activate their emotions prior to their acting work. Sometimes this Emotional Activation will provide incredible concentration and motivation and may even cause a quickening of accomplishing the task.

Going Deep into yourself and then adding that spark of spontaneity in the Emotional Activation is key on how to use Independent Activities in Meisner Training.

Learning Acting

We enter into the portion of the learning that is Practical or we have jumped to this portion of the book which is the Practical Doing of the work. Learning Acting involves the gaining of Practical Experience.

Turning over yourself to the experience being the teacher and not your intellect being our master turns our being in towards the work rather than executing our ideals of the work or who we may believe we may be. Practical experience is the practicality of allowing the experience to become the teacher and starting the work of real discovery or ourselves.

The notes and advises that come from a Teacher who is present during the exercises needs to be noted and considered by the student. However the student needs to allow the experimentation of experiencing the exercise by the self be the evidential proof of the doing of the work. Continuing their own growth in their own journey of learning acting will allow the student more involvement.

The Doing of the work becomes the teacher to the student who is willing to record accurately their experiences and be honest with themselves their measurements of success while committing to getting something done or achieving a reality with another human beings.

This accuracy of measuring the own success is the honest reflection of self which is the undoing of layers of self that accumulate to the student becoming the onion that is becoming unpeeled stage by stage, layer by layer. ?keep?

The Beginning of the Work: “In The Beginning”

Please Note: The Doing Exercise is how to involve yourself not how to preoccupy yourself.


In previous written exercises we have explored the Doings of your regular life and you have written down the Doings that you have done over the past several months of your real life. Let’s Utilize this work now as we learn “The Doing Exercise”.

The Doing exercise is an exercise that is done alone normally and involves you choosing an activity or a Doing to work on and complete to the level of desired completion. The lessons that are teachers within the exercise will continue throughout the training and even into the scene work. It is vital that you sincerely understand how to do what you are doing and have the skills to complete it.

Motivation is the key ingredient in Independent Activities. Without Motivation the actor will be left lifeless and desperate to perform anything they perceive as real yet not working within reality.

Proper functioning in life means the ability to do and accurately being able to achieve that doing to completion. The Doing Exercise is the practice of personally achieving many different Doings. Each Doing will follow the perimeter of the step and will be completed before going onto another Doing. Occasionally we try to achieve the completion of things that we are not capable and we can also learn from our ourselves inability to complete what we set out to Do.

In a way you are finding a series of Actions that when completed in order they achieve a storied result of completion. It can be any Doing or Activity that can tell an accumulative story of completion.
?add rules:? : has to accumulate in achievement, has to escalate in accomplishment, needs to be able to be a step by step process, can be calculated or measured in accomplishment, etc., \ “measured process”, including if it is a skill learned is the result of the practice measurable?

1.) Pick an Activity
2.) Check with yourself that there is a want to get it done
3.) Give yourself a Reason to have to complete the Activity.

In the Advance Stages

You may purposefully pick an activity that you don’t want to get done but are forced into having to do because of your added circumstance. You could be forced because of a situation or circumstance you are caught within. If you work with motivation that is not of your own desire but an outside pressure it will be different than if you simply choose something that you want to complete and give yourself a reason to complete it.
The main thing is to trigger inside of yourself a need or desire to get complete the Doing/Activity in front of you. If you operate under conditions that are similar to a prison camp having to get the activity done rather than having your own intrigue into what you are doing you may limit your own participation.

Overall Goal: To meticulously and diligently complete the Doing.
What this is Not: This is not a thing to pretend to interact with.

In an experience of accomplishing something, not how to preoccupy yourself for alternative reasons or avoid the experience with the other. Complete the doing of one of the following:

These Doings are activities that you need to use to implement into your improvisational exercise work. These are also a valuable list of additions that you can add to scenes and interactions in films.

Repetitious Doings/Activities
Acting Activities list 1:

Repetitious Doings are an important consideration to the work. If you find yourself heady in acting you may choose to do some Repetitious Activities in an attempt to help you stop thinking during acting exercises.

The work that we are attempting to achieve is non logical truthful Acting and/or Creative work. Spontaneous and freshly Alive is the desire of the relationships between the Actors and the Circumstances. Overloading the circumstances or doings within scenes or exercises can often hinder the freedom of the ability of the actor to learn.
Giving the Actor more Repetitious Activities to be able to achieve will allow the actor to be able to do the activity without logic. Non-Logical Doings provide an ability to grow into the inner life of the work rather than being stuck thinking about how a Doing is going to work.
